Topics include biological features, bee health and reproduction in new conditions; impact of environmental pollution on bees; hygiene; safety and quality of beekeeping products; their use in apitherapy for post-traumatic war syndromes; and other issues of war influence.

During textbook preparation, the Project Team will collaborate with experts from universities, research, and advisory institutions on beekeeping within UA, partner countries, and other. Textbooks will provide research and practical information to help women whose beekeeper husbands have been killed or injured acquire beekeeping skills, and support women, veterans and young people in starting beekeeping as professional beekeepers are at war.

About the Textbooks

A small number of modern textbooks and educational materials on beekeeping have been published in Ukraine. Majority of them are post-Soviet, outdated, or published only in paper.

So, scientific, educational, or methodological literature, as well as beekeeping practices, have not addressed the new challenges Ukraine, include the socio-economic, environmental impacts of the war, the critical reduction in professional beekeepers who died in battles, death of bees due to use weapons, inability go to honey plants due occupation and curfew.Martial law has particularly manifested negatively through the use of chemical and unknown weapons, impacting the health and reproduction bees, quality of bee products, and pollution of water, soil, air, plants in natural biocenoses and agrosystems. Many colonies and apiaries have been completely destroyed, with some surviving in unsuitable conditions without the help of beekeepers. In many regions the number of bee colonies, beekeepers, process of pollination natural ecosystems and cultivated crops, has sharply decreased.

Due to the mobilization of men to army, beekeeping is now primarily done by women who don’t have sufficient knowledge. For this reason,it is necessary to develop innovative approaches to beekeeping in these new realities, including addressing the current problems of restoring beekeeping in Ukraine regions affected by the war. These approaches should be taught in e-textbooks and made accessible to many people.
